El Derbi Madrileño has returned once again as the two biggest rivals in Madrid face off in what seems to be a tight race for the title this season.
Date: 28th September 2019
Time: 21:00 CET
Stadium: Wanda Metropolitano Stadium
Atlético Madrid will host Real Madrid in the first Madrid derby of the season.
When the two Madrid clubs meet in La Liga it is always an intriguing sight, though when it is this early in the season it could well have a major implication on which side offers the most challenge to Barcelona for the league title.
These two teams have been battling it out all across Europe, winning major competitions and silverware as a result. In fact, the two clubs had met in Lisbon for the 2014 UEFA Champions League Final, making it the first time two clubs from the same city played in the final. They also met for the 2018 UEFA Super Cup where Atlético came from behind to win the match after extra time.
The two sides have recruited new faces since their last encounter. The Atleti will look strong with the introduction of their young striker João Félix and Spurs’ Kieran Trippier at the back. It will also be the first time Marcos Llorente will face his former team after his move in the summer transfer window.
On the other hand, Zidane has made progress with reinforcing his team following his return to the Bernabeu. The likes of Eden Hazard and Luka Jovic can prove to be vital signings that can make a difference in the scoreline.
The Spanish title race is set to be very tight this year with just one point separating the top-six - which doesn't even include Barcelona.
Real Madrid had only won two of their opening five games of the season when heading to Sevilla and coach Zidane was under pressure following the shocking 3-0 loss at Paris Saint-Germain.
A win at the Metropolitano could silence any questions that have been raised about coach Zidane’s future.
Atlético will have to first face RCD Mallorca tonight while Real take on Osasuna at home in pursuit of the new leaders Athletic Bilbao, who have only conceded once in their five matches this season.
Atlético Madrid Team News
Diego Simeone’s side will likely use the same starting XI but will definitely make a few tactical changes following their recent results. Thomas Lemar will be out of action for quite some time due to sustaining a hamstring injury last week while their right-back Sime Vrsaljko will probably return to the field next month.
Predicted Line-up (4-4-2)
Trippier, Savic, Gimenez, Lodi
Koke, Herrara, Saul, Felix
Real Madrid Team News
Zinedine Zidane currently has three players who are out due to injury. The likes of Marco Asensio will not make an appearance in this year’s derby due to a cruciate ligament rupture last July. Luke Modric and Marcelo have been absent in the past matches but will likely make their return just in time for the big derby.
Predicted Line-up (4-2-3-1)
Carvajal, Varane, Ramos, Mendy
James, Bale, Hazard
La Liga Standings after Matchday 5
Real Madrid have dominated Atlético over the course of the 164 matches played so far in the league. Real recorded a total of 87 wins compared to Atleti’s 39 with the remaining matches ending in stalemates.
In the two La Liga derbies last season, the two sides had a goalless drew but Simeone’s men didn’t manage to use their home advantage as they lost by a significant margin. Since then, the two sides only met for the International Champions Cup where Atlético won 7-3 in the first derby outside of Europe.
Here’s a look at the last five results:
Feb 9, 2019: Atlético 1-3 Real
Sep 29, 2018: Real 0-0 Atlético
Aug 15, 2018: Real (2) 1-1 (4) Atlético (UEFA Super Cup)
Apr 8, 2018: Real 1-1 Atlético
Nov 18, 2017: Atlético 0-0 Real
It is difficult to predict what type of strategy each coach will choose due to the nature of the contest. The Atleti are undefeated in their last 10 home matches while Los Blancos have not lost a single league match so far this season.
It is clear that recent meetings between the two team have been extremely tight, so we predict a low-scoring draw in this one.
Atlético Madrid 1-1 Real Madrid
Will Eden Hazard find his first ever goal for Real Madrid or will Zidane opt to keep in-form Benzema at the helm of the frontline?
Take a chance and win!
