We are just a few days away from Michela’s performance in Tel Aviv and the excitement is building. Michela claimed her chance to represent Malta at the Eurovision Song Contest by winning the Malta X Factor competition in January, and has now secured her spot in the final - but what are the chances she’ll win in Tel Aviv?
Since winning the X Factor Michela has gained recognition worldwide for her infectious song Chameleon. Her voice is even being likened to the famous Dua Lipa’s, but beyond her newfound stardom, Michela is a regular student from the island of Gozo. Michela has stunned the world no less, as it only took 5 weeks for Chameleon to surpass 5 million views on Youtube. Even though she’s just 18-years old, Michela carries great expectations and promises for Malta.
In between 1991 and 1998 Malta earned eight consecutive top ten places, including third places in 1992 and 1998, and runners-up spots in 2002 and 2005. However, Malta’s recent contenders failed to qualify for the final in three of the last four editions. This year Michela will be hoping to break that streak and shine at the final.
Michela has an all-star team behind her including Ambra Succi and Front Pictures who between them have 2 Eurovision-winning performances, giving Michela a real boost. Their choreography is still remembered - Ambra Succi, worked with Loreen on her performance of “Euphoria” back in 2012 and Poli Genova for her performance of “If Love Was A Crime” back in 2016.
Malta has a history of punching above their weight in the Eurovision, and Michela certainly can’t be written off. With a powerful voice, catchy song, and strong choreography it will be no surprise if Malta turns out to be a strong contender on 18th May.
